Chicago’s Catalyst Ranch is proud to be a green meeting venue!  First of all, we love vintage furnishings as you can see once you step off the elevator!  Eva, Ranch Czarina, and many of our creative Ranch Hands have a knack for beautifully re-purposing what others might throw away.  By looking at things in a different way, you can combine unexpected materials to create special pieces.  We take all kinds of steps to be as green as possibly from recycling and using energy efficient lighting and donating leftover food to the Pacific Garden Mission.  Being green not only saves money and helps protect the environment, it feels good!  Here are three ways to have some fun celebrating Earth Day this year!

Smart Second Hand Shopping

Couples purchase items for their wedding that they are only going to use one time.  So, where do all of these perfectly good vases, table signs, and candle holders go?   Hopefully not to a landfill, but rather to another couple that can use them on their special day. Shop and support the Chicago Green Wedding Alliance this weekend at the Wedding Recyclery.  The second annual Wedding Recyclery is a garage sale of sorts where you can find vintage tabletop items, guest books, jewelry, shoes, and more!

Ride a bike!

It might sound corny, but when I started cycling, my entire experience as a Chicagoan changed.  On my bike, I get to see all kinds of architecture and establishments that I would overlook if was driving or taking the CTA.  I feel like I know the city inside and out now, and I have the freedom to explore it as I please.  In addition to being a great way to squeeze some exercise into a busy lifestyle, cycle commuting will help you save money you might have otherwise spent on parking, a Ventra card, or a gym membership!

If you don’t have a bike but want to give city riding a try, you are in luck because it is Divvy Bike Week.   You’ve probably seen the blue Divvy bikes stationed all over the city.  This is the perfect time to see what Chicago’s bikeshare program is all about.  Now through April 27, you can test ride a Divvy Bike with a 24-hour pass for only $5.  Bonus!  New customers get a coupon for a free burrito at Chipotle and current bikeshare members will receive a coupon for 50% off at Forever Yogurt!

If you get going on a bike now, you’ll be a hard-core Chicago cyclist by the time Bike the Drive  rolls around on May 25.  Bike the Drive is an annual fun ride hosted by the Active Transportation Alliance.  It is the only day of the year that you can ride your bike on Lakeshore Drive.  The round-trip distance encompasses 30 scenic miles from Bryn Mawr Avenue to 57th Street.   For pros and amateurs, you can start the ride at your leisure and bike as little or as long as you like during the event!

Rethink Spring Cleaning

Before you throw those tin cans in the trash (well, the recycling bin), think of the other uses they have!  You could go out and purchase a bunch of small flower pots OR you could be smart and cool and save money by reusing what you already have to start one of these awesome herb gardens!
